For a woman, the average monthly salary for a non-union employee is about $11,000. For a woman with a union contract, it is roughly $22,000.
On average, the monthly salary for male employees is about $34,000 while the women’s average is roughly $23,000.
A lot of the disparity comes from the fact that many women also hold full-time jobs, which can add significantly to the average hourly wage. For example, in 2007, 28.5 per cent of males in professional and managerial occupations earned $50,000 or more a year compared to 19.1 per cent of women who earned $50,000 or more.
It is also worth noting that for men, the average female executive earns more than $90,000 while the average non-union male executive salaries range from just over $50,000 to $100,000.
The average salaries for all the professions are also a bit higher than what you would see when looking at salaried employees. For instance, the average salaries of dentists and optometrists, who perform orthopedic surgery, are between $81,760 and $91,240 while lawyers in the same professions average from $71,040 to $80,140.
What happens to those salaries?
Although the average salary for an employee is a good indicator of the pay for the industry, the numbers don’t represent the full story of how those individuals are compensated. In fact, you probably know that some of those figures are inflated based on how much they are paid by union.
The average salaries listed in this table represent the median earnings for the workforce as a whole and is skewed somewhat by employees in a minority of sectors. For example, male professional and managerial workers earn $34,100 while female professionals and managers earn $31,450.
Furthermore, the wage gap is actually worse than what you might be used to seeing. According to a survey by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), about 30 per cent of women are denied entry to a top law firm if they can’t pass a bar exam to become a lawyer, compared to about 12 per cent of men.
Another issue with the table is that it doesn’t tell you what an employee’s earnings would be if they were self-employed or a sole proprietor, as they work in small and medium business. If you were an employee and decided to become self-employed,
