On July 23, a large group of white supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia, for their national convention. The convention drew far more media interest than the one in Louisville had the year before, but even though organizers made sure to point out that the two conferences were different, and that “both are not anti-white,” the Louisville rally attracted both hatred and condemnation from white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and Ku Klux Klan members and sympathizers. It was the first Charlottesville-related rally of the year, and it attracted the largest number of hate groups, including neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and members of the KKK.
White supremacists had planned to protest the convention, but they were prevented from entering Emancipation Park, by police officers with the local police department in charge of maintaining order. Protesters chanted hate and slogans against these white supremacists. But the actions of these police resulted in their own demise. According to reports, they blocked off the parking lots of both the KKK and white supremacists’ headquarters in order to keep the protesters at bay. (Some of the protesters even held up crosses.) These police departments were the very same ones that the mayor of Charleston said were “not equipped or prepared to deal with these [chaos] situations.”
The police presence at Charlottesville was not adequate to ensure that the city was safe.

There were protests within the confines of the city—protesters blocked entrances in front of state offices and the capitol, they burned Confederate flags, and they blocked highways. They even called for the mayor of Charleston to step down.
