As most of you know by now, it looks very likely that the U.S. Air Force will be cutting the number of fighters in its inventory during the next five years. The Air Force will not be in a position to build enough planes, and the only way it’ll be able to build them is with massive amount of money (it’s estimated that the Air Force will be able to build between 9,000 and 11,000 planes per year through 2018). The only way that it can do this is with the help of the private market. This is the reason why it is still so very possible that the Lockheed Martin F-35 will not be purchased (although perhaps a single aircraft like the Boeing F-22 Raptor or the Eurofighter Typhoon will win the day).
It looks very probable that Lockheed Martin will build at least 5-6 full/complete F-35 Block 3 fighters per year from 2019-2030 (see chart below), but as much as I like the idea of building a full operational F-35 fleet, I don’t think they will build a sufficient number of them (the total number would be at least 4,700 and probably upwards of 5,000 aircraft by the end of fiscal year 2021). The biggest hurdle to getting an aircraft like that built is getting enough money to buy such a huge aircraft.
