“Graffiti started in the 1950s,” says Kevin McElroy, who runs the website New York City’s Art on the Street. “It was a thing that was part of what made people who lived there, who lived nearby. It wasn’t just on the corner and on the wall, but you had graffitists around in New York City, including in the ’50s and ’60s.”
In the 2000s, the term “graffiti art” started to appear in American media, like on BuzzFeed or on TMZ (a popular web site in the ’00s that focuses on the lifestyle). Now, graffiti is a broad term that describes any graffiti in any form and in any city in any part of the world. It also tends to encompass an activity that has many facets.
So much, in fact, that many people who call themselves graffiti aficionados don’t know what they are talking about, says McElroy.
“There’s not enough attention paid to the actual writing in many [graffiti] galleries,” he says. He adds that graffiti artists can also get caught up in politics, and in some cases, have criminal records.
In the last few decades, graffiti as a graffiti art genre became popular, even gaining its own name; in the ’80s, it became known as Urban Graffiti, a term that McElroy believes has been misunderstood by the public.
In fact, Graffiti artists and writers are constantly being questioned about their motivations and their backgrounds, he says. “That’s not true anymore,” McElroy says. “That’s just part of graffiti now, and that’s not a dirty word. There’s a place where we’re at with it.”
What is urban graffiti?
Graffiti is commonly seen in New York City and other major cities, as long as those cities have been visited and explored by tourists. However, there are many other cities and countries where the artform is still prevalent, including places such as Rome and Morocco.
While graffiti can be found everywhere, many people would probably not realize how prevalent graffiti is on the city sidewalk until they visited some popular areas of New York. For example, it is more common in New York to see graffiti on the sidewalk on any given day, but in Manhattan, some parts are known for their graffiti spots.
