What do graffiti tags mean? – Spray Paint Art Stencils

What is graffiti tagging? What is the “graff-writing” industry? What is the significance of “graffiti” in the United States and what is its history? The answers to these questions will have tremendous implications for the future of graffiti culture and its representation in the English-speaking world.

This course is taught for the first time by a faculty member from the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Communication. With the backing of the Philadelphia Arts Commission, this course is a collaboration between Penn’s Department of Communication and the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Culture and the Arts.

Course Schedule

The online portion of the course is split into three components:

1. An Intro to Graffiti (2.50) — provides basic information about graffiti, the historical record of it, and its origins

2. Graffiti in the United States — introduces students to graffiti as a cultural phenomenon

3. Graffiti in America — provides a brief overview of graffiti and traces the history of it in America, focusing on the history of graffiti in Philadelphia as well as discussions of specific topics of interest including its use by local organizations and communities, and of particular significance in the American imagination.

3. Writing in Graffiti — introduces students to how graffiti writing takes hold in the real world in the context of urban society.

Prerequisites

This course is a hybrid online-teaching format. This means that it relies heavily on the use of the Internet to facilitate the class. However, students will not need to download and install a program to enroll. Students who cannot attend and do not have Internet access are welcome to attend the class in person if they wish (although they may be required to attend the online portion by request after the start of class).
