The US is to make a “substantial” commitment to Iraq, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated criticism of foreign policy of his predecessors.
In a statement on Friday, American Defence Secretary James Mattis said the US would “provide more than $600m in humanitarian assistance” to Iraq over the next decade.
Mr Mattis, who was speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, said the “U.S. commitment to the security, prosperity and stability of Iraq will not end with the end of this mission”.
He added that the current government “will also continue to cooperate” and that the two sides had an “obligation to work together to support the democratic transition that is needed for Iraq to remain a strong partner for the US in the years to come”.
The statement comes after Mr Trump publicly criticized last week the previous administration’s policy on Iraq following the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein, describing it as a “tragedy” that “spills blood”.
At the time, Mr Trump called the policy “disastrous”. In his speech to the Aspen Security Forum, the Secretary of Defense said the United States was already making a $400m pledge to Iraq as part of a larger commitment.
But he added that the Iraqi government could be expected to provide more in the short term, adding: “In the future, we will supplement that.”
Mr Trump has repeatedly spoken out against international military presence in Iraq, with his administration’s military leadership arguing that a U.S. withdrawal could lead to a regional Sunni-Shia conflict.
In the past week, however, Mr Trump has spoken out in support of a “boots on the ground” mission.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and National Security Adviser Hoshyar Zebari are to meet with Mr Trump later this week in Washington DC.
