The US government is seeking to deny visas to citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, warning that their travel is being viewed as a possible “threat” to US national security.
Iran, the first country to be named as a “nation of particular concern” on a security blacklist issued by the executive department, is not included in “the Visa Waiver Program for Foreign Nationals” released on Thursday.
The US State Department’s visa blacklist includes 13 Muslim-majority countries across the globe, including all countries listed in Mr Trump’s travel ban.
But the US government is arguing that it can be seen as threatening in the eyes of Mr Trump. According to the list released there, Iran is the only country “listed as a state sponsor of terrorism because it supports terrorism or acts in support of terrorism or the Taliban or acts to support terrorism”.
The new president signed the executive order barring citizens from nine majority-Muslim countries on 7 January. While his order includes one exception for dual nationals, who are not permitted to enter the US for any reason, critics say the measure would allow the administration to deny visas to anyone it deemed a threat, without explanation or due process.
