In the wake of a string of high-profile sexual harassment scandals in the past year, women have been speaking out about the issue. But just how widespread is the problem when it comes to sexual-harassment issues on the college and university level?

To address this, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), a nonprofit association of colleges and universities in the United States, released new research last week that provides some insights.

The study found that women who feel uncomfortable talking about sexual harassment are more likely to stay silent about the complaint or have their allegations dropped.

“There is some research that says that victims are more likely to be silent because they are afraid of retaliation or because [the university’s administration] is so uninterested in hearing it,” says APLU Executive Director Julie Muhlbach.

Another study found that of 465 students interviewed from a variety of colleges, only 18 of them reported having been sexually harassed on a campus. Of that group, 17 identified as African American.

In both studies, more than 80 percent of the survivors said their college or university was either unaware that they were experiencing harassment or did not take the reports seriously, the APLU said in a release Thursday.

“I found the survey results of these colleges to be quite disturbing,” says Muhlbach.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Kansas also declined to comment at length.

“It’s hard to get women to speak up because most feel shame or that a decision is too hard for them to admit they are uncomfortable,” says Muhlbach. “When people say that they think there is a lack of education about sexual harassment, well, for this I think the answer is actually yes, there is. We should be doing a better job of educating ourselves and our students.”

LONDON — At about 3 a.m. on Sunday, January 18, I found myself in what would be one of three houses overlooking the Thames River in London. A man who used to work in the offices of the U.K. Ministry of Defense had called and invited me to meet him in his home on the river bank.
