What are the dance etiquette in social dancing? – History Of Social Dances In Africa

Are there any steps that you or your school or band would like to take in this regard? How does a partner find you when you go out for social dancing; who finds you in those situations?

I’m from Toronto for example, I’m a dance instructor who has been doing this for a long while. And I’ve seen it with my friends and I’ve seen it with my class; and I’ve seen it happening in the street and I’ve seen it happening at my classes and in bars all around the city. So I think sometimes people get too sensitive about that – how you are perceived by others and it’s understandable. So what I really think we’ve just got to work on is when you go out for social dancing and they don’t see you as being in my circle of friends or if they don’t see me as one of their friends, that we really need to put ourselves out here and we have to say, “Here’s our friend, here’s our buddy” and we have to make that connection with our partner, and that’s really what we’re looking for, or that’s what our students are looking for – it’s that first step. You need to say, “Hi, here’s my buddy that wants to dance, I know who my partner is and where he’s at.” Just so people know, as they might not know your address or might not even know where you live – say I know your street, and if you want to go out to the dance you’re going to go to my party. And then you’re going to walk the way you want, and you’re in my party or I am in yours.

Dancers of our age know how important being friendly is to us. As a dancer, you shouldn’t be trying too hard to be friendly around dancers, or being friendly with your friends; you should be making that connection to your partner and the dance. Just saying hi to the guy next to you.

Also – I want to talk a little bit about how our dances have changed in the last 10 years. I’m not sure whether to be excited or nervous and I’d like to know how you feel about the future of dance to some extent, how your dance culture is changing and how the culture in Canada continues to change and evolve as we get older?

I would go back to that little story I told before of me meeting my husband. I didn’t know I was marrying somebody from Toronto because it really was just the one-night stand
