I’ve been in the dance industry for almost 20 years and I can tell you that this is one of the better ways of creating and managing your own music and dance mixes.
As a DJ I can create music for any type of event as a producer or mixer. If I’m at home I can create a dance mix for my son’s birthday party, and if I’m at home with my crew I can mix for a dance floor event with my DJ.
I’m also happy to create a mix for a party event featuring an A&R person or some other “creative manager” if I’m working with that part of the industry.
Now, what’s it like when I’ve got mixed mixes?
Sometimes it’s great. And sometimes it’s awful. And there’s plenty to discuss.
The other day I found myself in a difficult situation. I’d been trying to get this mix for weeks and I’d tried hard enough.
If it was my job, I would’ve done my best. But as a music producer, I have to take responsibility and make things better.
I was working with DJ Premier, my friends in the house and the management of a party I was going to throw. It was a mix that had been in the works for a while. I was doing the best that I could and it was starting to show. But then the party turned at the eleventh hour. Everyone thought it was great but I wasn’t sure. I was at a crossroads and I finally decided that I would put my music out.
At this point some of the other producers were listening and saying “no! No! No!”
What are the downsides of mixing for the sake of mixing?
One of the downsides of creating a dance mix is that it’s not always a chore. I love to mix because it’s my passion, my outlet, a way to express myself, and my job.
But it can be a pain. Like anything, your body has different reactions to certain things.
I don’t know about you, but I like the feeling of a good mix as much as the next person. And I’m not alone in this. I’m thinking of all the people who have done all things professionally and for free just to get mixes together.
It’s great when I create a mix and I can really enjoy what’s happening and feel I’m helping others.
