The story of the discovery and the subsequent publication of the original manuscript of the “Proceedings of the Royal Society of London” is one of two monumental events of the nineteenth century. The first is the publication of an original edition of the “Life and times” of Charles Darwin, in 1866. It had been a century and a half since Darwin’s publication of The Origin of the Species, and the book was a runaway success that was translated into eleven languages. The second is an attempt to publish a revised and enlarged edition of the book, with two additional volumes including the original manuscripts of the “Essay on the Origin of Species” (published in 1859) as well as three new and extensive chapters on the “Great Evolutionary Paradigm” and the “Great Flood.”

The original manuscript was published in 1861 with the title “A Treatise of the Origin and Causes of Species” but with the editor being Thomas Henry Huxley. The volume was a complete revolution in the study of evolution, with many new aspects and a revised text. The second edition was published in 1866, and included new material and corrected some of the earlier material.

The first two volumes were published by Charles Darwin in the London School of Economics in 1864. He edited the third volume “The Discovery of the Principles of Evolution” followed by “Man.” After his death, his son, Charles Darwin, edited the two remaining volumes “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,” “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection and Selection as a Simple Procedure,” and “The Structure of Species.”
