The saffron in question was harvested from a single small plant called “Sanchivara saffron”, in the Pathanahalli district of Karnataka.
As the man’s head was examined, he slowly began to explain that the method of the process is quite obscure and requires a lot of finesse in measuring. It also requires proper knowledge of the plant and proper equipment — the right gloves, a good microscope and a lot of patience. For him, though, it was also important that no one else knows about his process to ensure his secrets remain out of the public gaze. In fact, he said he has to keep his secrets “in a box of gold” to ensure that anyone who is not careful with other saffron is never able to get to grips with what he has done.
So, what is saffron?
According to the dictionary of Indo-Aryan languages, saffron is one of the most distinctive spices and fragrances ever known, as well as one of the most ancient spices and perfumes created by man.
There are many other distinctive ingredients and attributes which make saffron, which comes from the corky flower (also known as Pavan and Acharana), so special.
One of those qualities is a strong smell that makes you feel as if you are getting inside a room filled with smells all at once, that you can only glimpse. The smell is so overpowering that one feels almost like being in an intimate moment with the aroma that wafts out from the plant itself.
In fact, a typical scent that you could have expected if you were standing in the middle of a desert desert could not be anything less than intoxicating.
In addition to being a great culinary spice, saffron is also the oldest spice known to man. It is said to have been discovered by the ancient Greeks in 2,500BC and not long thereafter it was found being used in Indian cuisine as early as 1,500 years ago.
