The right conditions for Saffron to grow are: A well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
Water that is a bit acidic.
A dry and cool temperature of around 30 degrees.
A high humidity level of 35% – 50%.
A pH of around 5.6. Saffron grows best in a soil with the highest organic nutrient levels and maximum water retention. This should be at a location that receives only the most direct sunlight.
If you find that there are not enough plant nutrients in your soil for your plant, a solution of 2 tbsp of baking soda per gallon of water will help. In the same proportions as your soil – you can add in 1 ½ tsp. of peat bran or clay grits for a slight alkalinity boost. It’s best to use peat bran if you notice a noticeable difference in taste or texture.

To get started growing Saffron, follow these steps:
Buy a nice green bulb! (Most garden centers will carry some kind of Saffron bulb that can be sold to you.) Clean up your plant with a rag and wash out the air holes. The plant’s roots will also need to be cleaned and prying into the roots with a sharp knife will break the plant’s vascular system. Remove any broken stems or leaves at this stage.
After cleaning your plant, place the bulb (or leaves if there are no bulbs) into a well-hydrated medium.
Place your soil mixture in a pot with a lid and let the plant grow! As soon as the plant starts to feel the heat, cover it with the mixture of organic matter to create a humidity dome.
