Do some people suffer from schizophrenia?
The exact cause of schizophrenia is unknown, although evidence points towards environmental toxins. Some studies have indicated that exposure to heavy metals such as mercury from the air, contaminated drinking water, or food, or occupational exposures to chemicals have been shown to increase risk of schizophrenia. Another common cause of schizophrenia is exposure to chemicals that mimic the neurotransmitter GABA, which is involved in regulating the activity of other neurotransmitters such as dopamine. One study showed that heavy metal intoxication in conjunction with elevated levels of glutamate and GABA were linked to an increased chance of developing schizophrenia. Another study showed that heavy metal contamination, particularly lead, combined with an increased dose of glutamate and GABA, were linked to a higher risk of developing schizophrenia.
