This morning, the Seattle City Council voted 5-3 to legalize recreational pot sales under the current system. The council voted to allow marijuana businesses to start selling their products in April 2017, when the existing regulatory scheme is scheduled to end.
“I think it’s a great day for our city,” Councilmember Kshama Sawant said Thursday ahead of the vote. “Seattle is poised to become the first major city in the United States to legalize medical marijuana.”
Sawant says she’s concerned that this vote was done without serious debate around the proposed regulations, which she says do not fully reflect best practices in the industry. The council will take another vote on the issue next month.
“The fact that I voted in favor of this vote shows I do believe that there are a lot of concerns that we as citizens have about the current state of medical marijuana regulations,” Sawant said.
“I don’t think it’s going to be effective if we have the same thing as we currently have in place,” Councilmember Bruce Harrell said ahead of the vote, in comments he later clarified. “But in a state where we’ve had an election and we have real decisions to make, we’re going to need to look at these [regulations] ourselves as we proceed with the ballot initiative.”
According to a poll released before the vote, the city’s voters split 41.6 percent to 38.6 percent for an eventual pot-by-mail scheme in 2018. Advocates say the city’s current system still prevents small-scale marijuana growers and retailers from thriving and creating jobs in and around the city.
The state’s Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act defines medical cannabis as “an appropriate treatment for a debilitating medical condition, or a debilitating medical condition associated with a medical condition that the person has a history of.” It also has strict regulations that
