When it’s used in cosmetics or food we call it an invigorating ingredient, and when saffron is used as an emollient, a natural ingredient we call saffron extract. Now, the saffron is known because the Indians know a ritual that they perform in the fields that is very famous in the country. When someone has a painful eye, and they go to look for a saffron growing in the field and they come across a field of saffron at night, they use their knives and cut the root of the saffron, and they put the cutting edge of the knife on the saffron and keep cutting the saffron in the field, until the bleeding stops. So the saffron is very important to the people of Persia. It’s a traditional herb growing near the city of Shiraz where the Persian civilization flourished. This tradition is very common. I’ve been on a project to discover the origin of this tradition, but until now we have not been able to find the origin because this tradition is very common.
The way you made the saffron was by using a mortar and pestle with a small stone, called the stone or the stone of life. This stone is called the saffron stone. You put it into a mortar made of clay and it’s the same kind of mortar that we use to make clay mugs that say “Love Thy Neighbor.” So that’s why the saffron is called stone mortar, and the other stones are used to make ceramic. This stone mortar has this little glass box in it that makes you look up.
