When you dance, you’re moving your body in some complex and complicated way. You must work a certain way in order to get the greatest movement. Many people just think, oh, you have to be really skinny to do pole, and in fact, pole has helped me to stay skinny.
A pole dancer gets into that stance, and that stance is one that is not going to be easy. That would take years of practice. The thing is, when you’re not in that stance, you’re actually not doing anything. You’re just in a certain position.
If you go in there with a pole, you can have a good time, but you have to understand that it’s not easy. It would take a lot of work and dedication to do it to the same level as other sports or other activities.
If you want to be a pole dancer, you have to get in the position, you have to have the body to go over, you have to have the legs to go under, but ultimately, you have to work hard every single day, every hour, every minute of every day, just simply to achieve your goals – to achieve your dreams.
Do you want to become competitive in your sport?
Absolutely. And the first step was to learn how to balance. It’s an intricate and challenging exercise, and as I practiced more and more I could keep up with them.
Once we started doing it in schools, there were all these pole teams. And suddenly I was able to compete in school competitions with kids from different age groups.
I’ve won several competitions. I’m a world record holder with my top level. I won a championship in Japan a few years ago, and I won the world championship in New Zealand in 2010.
You’ve also worked on some really interesting balance and strength exercises.
I love balance and strength and I think these things go hand in hand. It can help you to perform in an amazing environment. Balance and strength is a huge thing for pole dancers.
When I go into competitions, I have a balance and strength workout at the end of the day. I go into the pole competition and I see everybody in their competition garb, but there are also some kids who just do their sport. And I get a whole team of little kids to compete in this balance and strength exercise.
It’s really great for their growth and development.
