What does this mean for the overall consumer?
Yes. The fact that people are having to buy more stuff as a result of the economy, and in fact, many companies will likely look at this as a positive (even if they are not actually increasing the price to anyone), means they have to look at what they are actually offering people instead which may be less expensive, but has less capacity. You could argue that the higher price could be a good thing in some cases, since it can attract higher quality customer services. But the problem becomes that if you are going to sell a lot, you probably need that business to have some capacity in it in some cases. In other examples, like an airline, you do have to pay a percentage of the total fares the airline charges to all their customers (the “farebox”), and it is very likely that some people (usually young customers that just get a little bit cheaper flight) just can’t afford it all. But many people can, like a small group of passengers. If we make people buy one ticket that is cheaper, then they are more likely to buy the higher quality products that will allow them to make their money back a lot more quickly.
So how does this tie in to the economy in general? While I think we need to be careful and balanced about how much of a negative impact this could have on the economy, it just makes sense that things would change if there’s less money in the economy and therefore fewer people making money, but at the same time, a lower priced product seems to be a good thing. The fact that it allows people to be able to keep going in a harder economy is something that the average person would appreciate and that a larger consumer economy would allow. Even if it is hard to determine these sorts of things as a whole, I think we can make an educated guess that the higher price probably means people will be more successful in their jobs and in their lives so perhaps its worth paying people more money to be on top of their game.
