It depends on how much you practice and how long you practice. The more you practice, the better you will be. If you are in a good rhythm, your body will start to feel more energy, with more control of the dance. This will give you a feel for how you dance as you practice. If you are not able to dance at a high speed, then your body may be too tight. If you can’t control your rhythm at the same time, then the energy can’t flow in. This causes a lack of dancing energy and a lack of control which can lead to injury. If you can’t control the energy, then you won’t get the feeling of control. Try a couple of times and see how you feel. If the dancing doesn’t feel good, then that’s the problem. That’s why I like to ask my students to take as little time as possible to practice.
How much weight should you use in your pole dance?
The size and weight of your pole should be to your specific needs. It will take time for your body to adapt to the new weight. For example, weight of a heavy pole will be difficult for children. But it is good if you have children and use your pole for fun. You can use an inflatable pole which your child can play with. In fact, that’s how I started my pole dancing. Before I started to practice I used a soft plastic pole. It allowed my child to learn how the pole feels on and off the ground.
You have said in your book that you would teach children about the art of pole dancing by giving them a dance demonstration. What would you say are the most important points of a good pole dancing demonstration?
Most important point of a good demonstration is teaching the basics. I teach my students how to go from pole to pole at high speeds and have energy with proper flow through the dance. But to teach them to dance better is also important. I say how to dance more with better rhythm. That is why in the beginning of a lesson many students are just starting and there is already a feeling of rhythm in their bodies. They can use it to dance even better and have more fun. Most students don’t understand and don’t practice the choreography. For example I teach to dance with one limb. I tell them about why it’s important. I tell them that if one of the limbs is too long or too short, then they can feel it, but I don’t want to worry about
