A man accused of robbing three convenience stores in two separate incidents in New Orleans has been arrested in New York, according to the Louisiana Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The department said the suspect, 43-year-old Matthew Thomas Tompkins, was arrested in New York on Tuesday.
“His prior criminal history includes burglary at the residence of a former girlfriend,” the department said in a news release Thursday morning. “The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services is investigating the incidents and may bring him before a grand jury during the term of his incarceration.”
Thomas Tompkins was charged with robbery and possession of a firearm without a valid license.
The first robbery happened about 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at a Rite Aid in the 6100 block of North Hammond Avenue. Security video showed Tompkins stealing a case of cigarettes from the front door of the store before fleeing with them.
Tompkins was caught in the act in front of another Rite Aid store in the 6200 block of South LaSalle Avenue. Surveillance video showed him carrying the case of cigarettes into an open cash register where he gave the clerk a fake Social Security card to get them.
