“I work at home. Sometimes I work in a car. Sometimes I paint on a train,” said Praveen, who is now working as a painter in Delhi and has already made a name for herself as an artist. “I can paint on a platform or in a moving train. I don’t need experience. Sometimes I paint in front of people.
“I want to be an artist but now I don’t have a work. I have to make my living.
“I paint on trains just because I can. On a moving train, I can always move the paint and I think it would be a good practice to paint from a moving train.”
Praveen, a student of art history who also wants to be an architect someday, has a strong taste for drawing. But she has limited budget. “I don’t have time for art class. I could do fine art if I had more money. But then I would have to wait till I get money,” she said.
She was one of the lucky ones who got admission into Jadavpur University of Arts where she is pursuing her BFA with a course on painting. She is now looking for a job, which could provide her the possibility to paint from trains.
“I have a lot of ideas. I want to paint in the streets. Sometimes it has been hard because I am scared I will get caught and fined,” she said.
Praveen thinks most people can learn painting, with the right guidance. People should have experience because it is really a skill to create and express your ideas. She also urges people to be more open-minded.
“I hope more artistes do well. This is our job to find our niche. I don’t want to leave anyone behind because I am a student of art history. That is my reason,” she said.
