Is the skill that you’re getting from this skillshare worth the difference in a salary? If not, maybe the skill you’re getting is too costly for you (and the cost of this skillshare is too high).
If you’re just starting out, the average amount of skillshares that is earned by a skill is $1,200 per year and about 3–5% of that is spent on salary. But as we’ve seen in one-percenters below, even if you’re getting 10% of the skillshare, you may find it’s worth less than you thought.
So what is the average wage to get to the $100,000+ standard? The answer has to do with what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis and how many days you’ve spent on it in the past year.
On average, I’ve spent about 20% of my time on projects in the past year. There are a few examples, however.
When I joined the company, we had four employees and I spent about 15% of my days on projects. However, one day, we had a new recruit join, so I had to spend another 15% of my time on projects. I know this sounds a bit low since it’s usually only 30-45% on projects but I don’t think that’s a bad estimate at all.
I have one of those projects that I do once a week. This one project is a new employee in my team and it was my first major project during my time there. I spent about 25%, or more, of my last day on it, because I was in an extremely stressful area and needed to prioritize and focus!
What about people who work less than 15% of their time on projects? This is where the 1% comes in. It’s what I call the average “value” per hour. A year ago, I had the same employee, but I didn’t have the 1% rule, so I put them all at the average, since it was my first major project. While some projects were smaller-scale, others were larger. There are a few interesting things to note with the 1% figure here.
As noted above, it’s more like 30% on projects, 20% on less-important ones. The other 15% is spent on salary and is typically a lower amount because, again, people need to earn more than that. When you’ve got less than 15% working
