Have no fear, there is one method to learn to draw in just a couple of days. No, we’re not saying you have to learn to draw like me. Not at all. What we’re saying is that if you want to learn to draw, the best and easiest method is to start from day 1. Start off with the easiest thing you can draw, anything you can put a little chalk on. Do that for a couple days. Learn the basic skills.
You might be surprised at the results, maybe you’ll have more interesting designs on the first try. That’s what our teachers at the New Jersey State Museum of Art said:
You can’t learn to draw right away. You have to practice! Try to draw all the things you think are important: a tree, something small, a big tree, a house. Just pick those up as you go through the day. Keep moving. The only thing you have to remember is that if something doesn’t turn out just right the first time, you’ve got all day to improve your drawing skills. You’ll become a faster, stronger and more graceful artist. Don’t let anyone tell you that learning how to draw means you can’t be a fast artist. The secret is practice.
But how can you practice drawing effectively? There are several ways. One way is a few simple exercises. One of the easiest exercise is a test.
Test your skill
1) Draw the thing you’re most interested in learning how to draw.
2) Get the first answer right.
3) Repeat step 2, but try to draw a different way.
Test and analyze your learning. This way, you will immediately see which direction is going faster; maybe your practice is more effective than your test, but is the answer correct? And then do two more tests, one of which has a test and one of which does not. Then move on and draw one more important image, one of which has a drawing problem. Then draw a small drawing picture and draw another problem on the smaller drawing page. That works for anything that moves or requires concentration. Just stick to the basic drawing elements—draw a tree or a house or something—and go through step 1 and 2 until you’re able to draw the next thing or get another answer right. You might find that you don’t get that right every time, but the point is you practice and continue in this manner until you’re a better artist.
