My first and most important step, I learned to draw the right way: with my eyes and my mind. You could call it a “drawing brain.” When you start drawing, you put things right where you see them and draw straight lines. If you are just using your eyes, you are making mistakes all the time and often you lose something or don’t get a point. To become really good at drawing, you have to think about every single point that you draw, and how you are going to be able to draw it correctly every time. This kind of thinking also makes you faster. I’ve drawn some really good drawings of cats which took me 3 minutes each to draw. Sometimes you need to make small corrections, just a tiny bit of a change is enough to make a huge difference.
But how do you get it right from “eye” to “mind?”
It’s all in what you see. If you see something you don’t like, you don’t have a right to keep it, so don’t think about it, just keep your fingers on the drawing pad and keep working. Your brain and eyeballs have very different abilities, so you can’t work on a line and not see something, but not on a picture and not draw it. If you draw a picture and you see the picture wrong, you don’t make an error on your part, you just can’t draw something. You can draw with your eyes and you can make mistakes, but when you put it to your brain, if there is anything wrong with the picture, it’s not something that just happened on the spot. You need to think about the whole picture, what the picture is saying about you and about the world. This has two advantages: it will help you to draw more naturally, and you won’t get distracted when you try to work on something while you’re watching TV.
What has been the best thing that’s happened to you since drawing?
My life is getting better every day, so if I had to make a choice, I would choose to be a better artist because my life has improved. I don’t see so many flaws anymore, I see more possibilities and am more optimistic and creative. I am very grateful for my parents because they are doing the same thing. They are giving me everything I need to learn and be happy so that I can learn another way to become amazing at everything, no matter what I try.
