The United Nations is working closely with the US to develop a new nuclear test ban treaty, in an effort to help prevent war that could be sparked by a new nuclear escalation or accident.
The treaty – which calls for a prohibition on nuclear explosions in all countries – is currently under discussion among the Security Council, the US and India and China, at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
It would also ban nuclear weapons, as well as long-acting nuclear weapons that would be able to be detonated much more quickly once activated.
“I am very glad to see that the Security Council has taken up a treaty on nuclear safety,” US Ambassador Robert Work told Politico. “This is a long-overdue step. I hope it will be ratified as quickly as possible, so that it will be effective before the new century.”
The proposed treaty would go into effect 15 years from when it enters into force, and would not supersede the current ban on nuclear tests, but in any case, India and the two US delegates, David Albright and Bill Richardson, are hoping for a quick turn around on the nuclear arms treaty.
At the meeting, it was agreed that the US is likely to be opposed, despite Secretary of State John Kerry’s pleas for an agreement.
