White keys on a piano are called fretless. They have the same range as regular keys, but have a different texture. Also called an “A”-note. (Click on this link to see if a string looks very similar.) These are the same shape as the string used to play “F” and there is a different texture.
Here is a simple example of white keys on a piano that is similar to that used for F. Notice that only 3 of the 5 finger keys have a finger groove: “A” , “B” , “C” . These are the same key size as strings with that shape. The 5th finger on the white F white key has a finger groove that isn’t used when playing “A” . White keys on a piano (with a different finger shape) are called “F-B” , “A”-F , “B-“A , “C”-F , or “D”-F . These are the same shape as fretless strings with the same string diameter. The F-B is the F major scale of all 3 strings that is played, except for one string. The A-F is the “bass” or “harmonic minor” scale of the 3 strings that is not played, while the B-F is the “double bass” of the 3 strings that is not played. Here is a simple example of a white fretless on a piano. Notice that there is only the 1st fret on all five pieces of the key.
