Are there any problems with guitar solos? Yes, and they are hard. But it’s because a guitar is so simple. This is true for other solos in the same way. It’s how to keep you on track if you’re trying to learn a new language. This is true for many of the things you can’t have on a piano, like a melody that doesn’t fit together. You can get away with it for a long time but it’s easy to break apart in the end.
How is it different from the piano? Well it’s very different in one way. Now here is how it works. Before the piano, you got your finger on the piano and were making a note. Now you have your hand on the guitar and it’s like an extension. So how does that work? Well, what you do is you touch it with your strings and then play back that sound. The strings are making the sound so now you see how it actually changes what the piano can do. What an awful thing to say and very hard to explain. If you’ve ever played with a string player, you will know what I mean.
So the first thing to say is that this is how most guitarists do this: first you get your finger on the keyboard, then play back the sound, and then you add your strings and it makes it sound like a rocker. I’m not trying to suggest that it sounds too good but if you can do this, the result is better.
Is what you wrote about you trying to learn a new language different from what someone else said? Yes, it’s very different. But it’s the same idea. And there are really no rules around it. The thing about the learning process – the one and only thing, the only thing you have to look at – is whether you’re trying to understand words, or whether you’re trying to understand music. So if you want to learn something, the first thing you have to do, is learn where music comes from. The second thing you have to do is then get your fingers on a guitar or another instrument and move on to the next step.
Is it a good idea to try a few different languages? You shouldn’t really. Don’t try to learn a new language just to find somebody who can teach you a certain language.
