Listen in and learn your child’s sound patterns, and you will be on your way to building music skills that will eventually lead to a great job, relationship or career.
1. Your child has a lot of problems to work on.
While it’s easy for us to get carried away by what is happening in his or her day to day life, I’m sure that you have a lot to work on as well. If that’s the case, just take two minutes to practice with whatever instrument you have. Let your child hear what he or she is playing – make it sound good, but don’t focus on the notes! Listen until you get the notes in your head that connect with the music. If it doesn’t sound right, just ask for an explanation and let him or her practice on his or her own.
This can be especially helpful if children learn on their own; if the music is challenging, give them some time to play their own version of the music.
2. You don’t want your child to get too good at a skill.
For my daughter, it is very important to me that she does not get in the habit of practicing for the sake of practicing. She does this very often. If you teach your child how to play an instrument, and then he or she gets a huge rush of enjoyment from playing it, you have created an obstacle. If your child is naturally creative – that is a good thing – but is also naturally good at making friends, then she will enjoy her skill enough to not get stuck in the routine.
3. You want him or her to play some music, at least once.
This is important for two reasons: first, music is great for us, and our music skills will help them develop a musical taste. Second, having a little fun while you can is one of the best things that can happen to your child.
4. Your child hasn’t learned to master a musical technique that you are interested in.
I have a rule that I will be giving to my students that is very important. You will hear from me that what they have mastered will be a very important skill for them to learn later on.
