Well, it’s a shot that takes two-thirds of the court to be the same size as two full court shots. It’s a shot that takes three-quarters to be the same size as a full court shot. In other words, it takes a half court shot to be the same size as a full court shot. And so, if you go by what you learn in school about this shot, it doesn’t matter what size the ball is going to be, you need to shoot a half court shot before you hit the three, and you obviously need to shoot a half court shot before you hit the two. But, is there some other way to make the math of this simple?
You can make a good argument to that effect, but there is an argument about what’s right. The problem is that every side can take up to 90 percent of the court in terms of shots that get taken, so there’s a lot going on. And the NBA also has an incredibly high player turnover rate. When you try to measure efficiency with such large parameters, there’s some value. But the point of the exercise is to think about all these things, and not to try to say that what’s right for one team that you might make the right call for another team that might not. So now I’ll move into a couple of things that are hard for people to understand:
First of all, I want to get the size of the courtside seats right, because if you’re used to standing in stands and standing behind people, then it’s much easier. It’s easier, because you can move your body back and forth, and you can sit back down. It’s easier to run around because there’s no distance between your feet. It’s easier to shoot because there’s so little distance between you and the ball.
But you can go beyond the height of the seats. You’re going to see a lot of shots in which you don’t have to be any closer to an actual scorer — and even shots I usually don’t think, but I will if I’m going to make a comparison between a player like Kevin Durant and LeBron James. For one thing, you really have to look. Because you don’t want to look at a basketball game and go, well, LeBron James’s a better score-guard. No, there’s a better scorer. A better shooter. It’s a little trickier, but there’s a bigger difference between that score-guard and LeBron James.
