Weight for age is the weight which a horse or jockey has been able to sustain for a period of time. A horse may have lost weight during the course of a racing season, or it may gain weight. A racehorse has the added advantage of having an unlimited amount of endurance and ability to perform at the highest level during a racing season.
How can weight for age be calculated?
Weight loss for age can be measured in many different ways. The simplest is to find the horse’s maximum heart rate, or maximum rate of oxygen uptake, during the day. Then, the horse will be considered as gaining weight. In other words the horse will be considered to be having gained weight.
This method of weight measurement is known as day of exhaustion (DOE). Unfortunately a horse cannot be measured on a specific date. Rather the DOE is based on the horse’s maximum heart rate and is based on a time span of a few minutes and/or a day. To measure a horse’s age, you calculate a horse’s maximum heart rate by dividing the horse’s maximum heart rate by their weight, which is usually approximately 30 pounds, or one pound to one and one-half pound. So that equa-weight is usually equal to the weight of the horse x 0.30 or 1 to 1 (i.e., 31.33) x (1 – 1), or 32.67. An equa-weight of 33 lbs. equals 28 kg (50 lbs.) x 1 (1 – 1), or 27.5 kg (59 lbs.).
Is this the weight of the horse?
If a horse weighs less than 30 pounds, you can find out just how much weight was lost during that weight loss. If the horse weighs more than 30 lbs., you may try to calculate how much weight the horse gained by dividing their maximum heart rate by their weight, which is usually approximately 20-25lbs (18-22.5). To calculate fat gain, divide their maximum heart rate by their weight, which is often approximately 20-25lbs. This is called fat gain, or fat for age.
An equa-weight of 1 pound equals 28.5 kilograms or 62 pounds. So if a horse weighs 31 lbs., this equa-weight equals 28 kg x 1 (1 – 1), or 31.33 kg. Now, since our equa-weight is 28 kg x 1 (1 – 1), then our equa-weight of 1 is
