If you go in the morning before a date, you’ll see flappers wearing jeans (no bra) and boots (no bra), and they’ll put on their flappers, and go to their dress code, and do what they’re going to do. That’s a sign of respect. I guess you have to earn it. You have to earn respect.
Q: If you’re playing a video game and somebody asks you a question about the characters in your video game, does that always prompt you to be honest?
Spencer: That’s so funny. If I’m playing a video game, I’m thinking of the people I’m talking to and what they’re saying. When I’m at a book signing, I’m thinking of the people I’m talking to and, if I can relate to a situation they’re in, I’m gonna say something along the lines of, “I’m a writer and I have a novel you might be interested in. I met this person and said this is what I think would work in the novel.” I’m actually a pretty good self-promoter, so if I write some nice stuff, and it gets some attention, then that’s something. But people will often ask me for stuff and I’ll be like, “Why are you here anyway? You don’t want to hear about my new novel. You want to hear about what I’m writing. You can read it! Just tell me. Why do you want to know about my new novel?” So I just start asking them.
Q: Do you ever look back and try to come up with an answer to that question?
Spencer: I do look back from time to time and I see some of the questions I was asked at the beginning, and it doesn’t really bother me. And I also, in the same way as many writers, look back and wonder, “What were you thinking? How did I react to the situation?” I don’t think it’s a big deal. You have to learn to deal with certain things, too, you know. I mean, if you were playing a video game, you just had to think about, “Do I have this game or not?” You know? In life, if you were asked some question in the middle of the night, or while you were out for a walk and somebody comes up to you and asks you a question about yourself, you just have to do your best.
