Why are the 1920s called the Roaring Twenties? – Red Flapper Dress Modest

The 1920s are also named a byword for partying. According to a report in The Globe and Mail: “If the 1920s are seen as a time when America was a bit more tolerant than now, they are actually more associated with binge drinking, promiscuity, and bad behavior than with sobriety, and most people today would find those characteristics quaint.”

So the 1920s is not just a time of alcohol, drug, and sex. There were riots, social unrest, and a whole lot of drinking. There is nothing more exciting than going to a bar—or a concert—and being part of a culture you have no idea exists! For a moment, everything is new, new, new. The party is only beginning.

Here are eight other times the 20th Century was called the Age of the Mad.

1872: American sailors and sailors from elsewhere in the world start sailing to the American coast in their ships known as the Docks. Many of them were Frenchmen or Britons who had come to America to escape the social turmoil of the French Revolution and were looking for a place to settle. They had to settle on American soil, too, which, unlike France, became an independent nation by the end of World War I.

1930: The Great Depression was starting and young Americans had a difficult time getting a job. Many of them were in trouble financially, had no savings to fall back on, and were out of work. The United States saw huge immigration and unemployment. So they started to buy things like furniture and other things that were considered luxuries in the 1920s.

1964: The Civil Rights Movement swept the country and the United States began to become more racially divided. Many African Americans moved to the South, where segregation was less pronounced and segregation was seen as more common than it was in other parts of the country.
