Who is the least famous flapper?
I’m sure that you’ll never know the answer. But we can tell you this: There was once a woman who was an extraordinary flapper and a beautiful, beautiful actress. She was known in Hollywood as The Flapper. She was so admired that she was rumored to be working at a nightclub in New York City when she got a call from somebody in her circle who was working for MGM who had been asked to make a movie of her. They were looking for someone and had decided that someone would be the most famous flapper, since the Flapper was such an old woman. The woman asked her if she knew anything about the movie she was being asked to make, and she told her, “Actually, no. I know nothing about that. Just a little something.” She didn’t believe her and sent them on their way.
What was your reaction when you discovered the existence of your great-uncle?
I wasn’t really interested because I didn’t want to know a lot about him or his life or anything. I’ve always loved my relatives and am very interested in them. I loved him a lot, but I couldn’t really understand it. I never knew him to be a bad guy, he just kept to himself, always had a smile on his face and was a good man. I was hoping that if I found him and discovered that he was the guy who had raised me, the real man, he would come to me, but I have never had any contact.
What did you do when you found out what happened to your great-uncle?
Well I called the place and I talked to all the people who worked there, to the people who lived at the apartment. I did get ahold of a few documents but I didn’t know anything about him. So I had to call somebody to tell me more, but the place closed and I didn’t know what to do. I called this guy and he knew something and he said, “There was a man who lived across from where you got your great-uncle’s ashes burned. He was the same woman that came from New Jersey and when they found his body they had told the people who he was, and they all agreed that he had passed away a few days before.” I said, “Yes, I know that. Are there any other relatives?” He said, “No, I lost my own family and there wasn’t another one.”
