It’s become commonplace to note that there are three classes of women—those who have it, those who don’t, and those who know how to fix it. If one were to take a closer look at the world of men and menopause, it would be more difficult to keep up. The women we all know, even those whom we hardly know, are in their late thirties; most of those we don’t hear from are in their sixties before they lose it. But in every generation there are exceptions—the children of parents who were able to raise them when the family did not give them the space. It is no coincidence that I was born near the beginning of my family’s tradition of strong, long-term relationships.
For a while, I had no real boyfriends. My mother’s friends called me their muse, my father’s friends would occasionally introduce me to boys he didn’t love, but all I was interested in was getting along with my mother. When I went to college, I was happy to make room for her friends’ girlfriends. I wanted my mother—she had lived through the war—to take care of me. She seemed to agree. By the time my mother died in 1999, I had gotten over my fear of men and menopause. That fear is still with me, though perhaps it’s lessening slightly.
