As we’ve heard in the previous discussions of their history and culture, a few things played an important role.
First, flappers were associated with the American lifestyle, and as a result, women took a particular interest in their clothing. Flapper magazines and advertisements are full of gorgeous and young female celebrities like Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Katharine Hepburn, among others. In fact, there is a strong subculture called “hippie flappers” who dress in hippie style and look very similar to the flappers of the 60’s and 70’s. These flappers had a very feminine appearance, but their style was still very masculine and was modeled by a man with a long flowing beard. This has been suggested to be an important influence, as the style is a direct representation of Western Manhood, and the strong masculine values of the period in American culture at least helped to define who would become the “flappers of the future.”
Women became increasingly interested in flappers’ clothes in order to make more “authentic” clothes for themselves and their friends. Also, women like Bette Davis wore clothes that were much more revealing than those of the period. Davis’ style was so striking it inspired a new fashion term, “flappers’ day,” meaning the day when women changed their clothes. As a result, women dressed in flapper style to express their individuality, and to show their ability to wear things that didn’t match who they were.

Women would also wear a variety of “specialties” like flapper hats, “lady dresses,” and a variety of dresses and jackets. In fact, some flappers were even “sisters” to each other and dressed and styled to look like each other. Flapper magazines became a place where women could read reviews of their favorite “hot” ladies and purchase them, which helped to create additional customers in the flapper community. Also, the flapper magazines helped to promote the idea of flapper femininity by creating a variety of outfits that fit the female body. For example, you could read reviews of clothing worn by Bette Davis and a bunch of other flappers.
All this to say that flappers were very much an American American phenomenon. It was a cultural phenomenon that reached all across the country, in all types of clothing styles and styles of women. Today,
