CALGARY – As Alberta’s economy begins to heal, the government will give first-time home buyers the tax credits they need to save for an Alberta dream home.

The new program – called the Alberta Home Buyer Tax Credit – gives first-time home buyers a rebate of a dollar for every $2,500 in down payment debt the person borrows to buy a new home.

“When one has the resources, the first thing they do is look for the best opportunity to buy,” said Premier Rachel Notley Wednesday in Calgary.

“There was a time a couple of decades ago when first-time home buyers couldn’t afford the home they could actually afford, it was an enormous burden, really.

“Now is now the time to start looking for that home to buy. It gives someone the opportunity to actually achieve the dream home they’re chasing, whether that’s in Edmonton or Fort McMurray.”

Alberta’s new home buyer tax credit starts in January, 2017 and would be phased in over five years.

If the program isn’t paid for during a year, the taxpayer can go back to pay it by April 1.

This is the fifth time this year Notley has introduced a home buyer tax credit program, so it’s the third time Alberta has received a new tax credit of its size since May 2015.

The previous two tax credits were for home buyers making under $40,000 a year and home buyers making more than $200,000. The new tax credit is being introduced for those earning up to a total of $160,000.

Home buyers can also claim one of their five previous Alberta government deductions. It includes two home-buyer taxes including a tax credit of up to $3,500 for first
