Syracuse (CNN) The mother of a 14-year-old girl who died while attempting to ride the Ferris wheel at Syracuse University said Friday there’s nothing “inappropriate or inappropriate” about a selfie she took with an attendant on Friday, but that the school should address the photo’s implications.
Rebecca Miller said her daughter, Tanishia, shared a group picture with the teacher, who was the assistant director, at the Syracuse International Airport on Friday morning around 9:30 a.m.
“We didn’t know what she was going to do. She didn’t know if she was going to be doing it,” Miller said.
A group called “Ferry Rides Against Gun Violence” took to social media Friday to thank Syracuse University for its response to the incident.
Tanishia died from injuries sustained in a crash on Friday, police said.
A witness described hearing multiple gunshots, screaming, and being hit by a car as Tanishia and her brother, Jacob, were hit in the car.
Tanishia was struck at a high rate of speed, but investigators aren’t sure why Tanishia was traveling at that speed, Miller said.
“That is a huge issue for us,” Miller said. “We don’t really have any idea what she was doing.”
She said Tanishia was riding at only a 30 mph rate of speed.
The incident happened less than 12 hours after Syracuse University announced that it is working with the state Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to create a program to allow people with developmental disabilities such as Tanishia, a student with cerebral palsy, to drive in a vehicle safely.
