How do you dress like the 1920s? – 1920S Flapper Dress Historical Pictures

One of the first things you need to understand is that the 20s were the last time that the dress that we wear today was ever worn in the early to mid ’20s. So this stuff came to the market really late. You know it was in 1920 and things start to take shape in ’28.

So how do you dress like that?

What I did the second and third things was find old clothes that were actually worn out. So the first thing that I would do was buy old pieces of fabric that had never been worn out on my body. So I would take the pieces, they would be like the fringes and the shoulders, and I would throw those pieces out for a whole year and just wear them. And I would work on my arms and legs. I would not be taking it as a personal project. As an artist, I would do that at a studio, so when someone was coming or going through my studio they could see how everything came together. There isn’t any wasted space there.

And then, if I was going out, I would be wearing it.

But I would always have this attitude, it’s just a work-in-progress…

So you were really, really into fashion, but you still used to be a fashion student.

Absolutely. I didn’t get into this art thing until I was like 23, which is the same age as the designer I’m hanging out with. We’re kind of the same age. That’s why I didn’t say it because you don’t need to be one thing. You should be able to change how you feel in the time that’s going to be your life. You should be able to change how you’re feeling in the world, how you’re feeling in your mind or what your purpose is. At 23 I’m making clothes in my mind, in my head! So it’s not just like, “Oh, I’m going to be this type of person.” I had to learn how to do that now, because I wanted to make clothes on every possible level.

Are you a collector of fabrics?

I’m always collecting all these new fabrics and experimenting with new materials.

I read that if your clothing is the same all over, it’s a sign of the artist.

I guess that’s true. There’s no such thing as good or bad. You can say if it’s a piece of art if it’s good, or if
