He’s a cartoon turtle, not a real one. He’s one of those things that you just draw, because that’s the thing that’s in your mind the most. And he doesn’t really look like a real turtle. He looks more like a duck.
And I remember when I was younger, drawing turtles—I remember drawing a big duck and an overgrown turtle, and I think they’re cute. But then when I started reading comics, I think I stopped being drawn by the whole turtle thing. I kind of stopped thinking of it as a turtle, and it just didn’t exist in my mind.
And now that I look back and find myself drawing it and making it look really really weird—well, it was weird. But I didn’t realize that I was making it weird.
How is it your most popular or most famous drawing?
I have a lot of very popular drawings. I’ve been drawing comic-book covers for Marvel comics, and I draw a lot of my own strips for other publishers. I’m doing a strip from the new Batman comic right now. And I think it’s pretty popular with women. I think you usually have to be pretty female to draw that kind of thing, but there is a lot of people who like that stuff.
It seems to me the comic book community is all about having a strong female presence, a strong female voice, because that’s one of the things we really can’t have in this business—unless it’s a black woman, a Latina woman. If we can’t have a female director, then it’s just not going to happen. So, even though I don’t have a big comic-book series, I have been drawing a lot of other things about women, like The Bold Type. It’s about female characters with funny voices.
What were your early days as a comic artist like?
I was actually kind of a pretty newbie when I started drawing comics. I learned how to draw by watching a cartoon on TV.
I was kind of a goofball. I mean I was a little bit, yeah, but I was a kind of a joke. A comic artist was just kind of a joke. And I didn’t think my comic-book background would make me a good comic artist, I thought I’d be a more serious comic-book artist. So basically, I just wanted to draw, draw, draw.
