You draw them in a certain way, with the lines, the colors, the lighting. And then once you’re done, you put them together—all of it is designed and built by someone. You’ve got engineers to make it look good and have something that looks like the car you want. So what are the challenges you faced at the time? There’s not very many, really, because it was so new, so it wasn’t a new challenge. But there were some that were very easy to do—we just thought, “OK, we’re going to do [a car].”

I think in many ways the car came to life. The first thing that happens is you’re designing two parts of the car that aren’t really part of where we want it to go. I don’t think anyone would have thought to design our engine with that in mind—that just wouldn’t have been possible. But it turned out to be just perfect and it got done.
That part of the process was also the beginning of the show’s evolution. You go from a car show to all these different ways that people could interact with the car: on television, online, and on all the different websites that people could go to look at.

For the first two years, I was on the road almost every week—and then that evolved into having to travel back and forth. You can go see the exhibition all over the area that’s shown at the show, but in the main exhibit hall, in the main hall of the museum, there’s all of this stuff that you can’t get in the main hall. You have to walk down some long stairs, even if if it’s not the main hall. There’s nothing to connect it. It’s sort of a strange relationship of being with this thing, and then coming back and finding a lot of the information on the Web, as well as finding all of this merchandise to bring your wife to check on if you’re going to take her away. That was a big part of it.
Then the show started to move to New York, and then later, you would go to other cities. Then you would go to places like Japan, Korea, and Australia. It was an ongoing thing, but in those early years, there wasn’t much in terms of a car that people knew about that was the kind of car that could handle it. Everyone was sort of wondering what this thing was, what it did. You could say
