I’ve been driving one over the course of this interview for over two years, but I couldn’t draw one of my own until today. That means you have to go through that journey yourself, just like the artist, or someone who can only draw a sketch.
I love to draw old trucks. It’s almost like having an older brother or something.
It’s funny how one’s perspective changes as they get older. Now my friend who is 75 says to me, “That car in the background looks a lot like my son. Where is he from?”
I was surprised that you were surprised. I hope we find common ground there to start with about a little boy. What’s your connection with that life story of a boy who looks like you? How does that make you feel?
I’m glad you asked that. I know I wasn’t the only one. He is the only boy and he is a special boy in that he was in a very special and special time in his life. He was just going from this big new city, and in some ways he just wasn’t ready, he wasn’t ready for his first love. But he tried and it worked and it was fantastic. For the majority of everybody that was going through a similar situation, they couldn’t even imagine what he was going through. He was an amazing boy, a great boy, a hero in my book. He was also this amazing person and had a beautiful soul. I think the people, the family just got along great and I just felt like, that’s just the way it is. You got to live with it. He was just a beautiful and sweet boy.
How would you describe your father to people?
Very different person than what he is depicted as in the books and movies. He was a very good person and a great guy and he was one of the most respected members of my family. We got along great together. He was like my older brother, he was just a sweet and funny human being. He liked everyone to have a good time, he liked to share some good times and just have a good time. He loved my younger brother, he loved my sister. He really loved his family because of their kindness and the way they treated him and his sister. My mom was the very best woman I’ve ever known.
