A truck is actually made up of more than the front and rear. There are all the tires and fender panels that make up the entire vehicle. This creates a whole new set of problems when you’re painting and applying the correct paint for the vehicle’s color.

The first thing you can do is get rid of things. If you’ve got a car with the side sills and the hood, you can probably do away with these pieces. The sides are made from the same aluminum as the windshield and all the other panels; it’s easy to remove and sand them.

For the taillamps, you can try replacing the old lenses, which are made and sold by the same guys who produce those. If that doesn’t work, you can use the old ones, but then you’re going to have to paint them again and again when you decide between replacing the taillamps with newer ones, or painting them over again.

If you’re painting the hood, you’ll want to use a paint that can actually give that old style of hood that you’re after. You won’t be able to do that with some of the newer vehicles.

Next, there’s a lot of wiring. There are so many different things you can do with wiring, it’s hard to cover everything for you right here. You can use a new wiring harness to connect the lights, power steering and other electrical connections, which will give you a lot more control over your engine, which will help avoid any sort of damage by lightning (this is a topic I’ll cover more in-depth in the second part of this article).

If you have a newer car you don’t have old wiring, such as an early Mustang or an early Camaro, you may not need to cover as many of these areas. These are the areas I mentioned earlier; if you do have a car with old wiring, you’re free to cover them.

At this point, the first thing you’ll want to be careful of is the air bags. There are different air bags made for different types of vehicles, and if you paint over the original, you will create a hole through which lightning can strike and cause damage. Some people have reported that they have painted over an air bag, and still had damage, so be careful.

Other areas to be careful of are the tires. Some older cars used the front ones to reduce weight; on newer cars, tires may need to be completely replaced by the manufacturer.
