I’ve started over with a new car in each year – I had a new front wing last year, a new rear wing (for 2014), new wheels and tires for the last year. It’s been a very, very long time. But it’s definitely the right moment for this, and you know that this is a great opportunity, and you want it. It’s good for both of you, it’s good for this sport, and for me. So that’s kind of the way we see it: if this comes about, this is great.
Do you have a specific vision for how you want to get the maximum performance out of the car?
I think it always has to be about the cars; it doesn’t have to be about the drivers. When you’re talking about the cars, I know the drivers are very aware of what goes on behind the scenes and what’s going on; I think that’s why it’s very important for us here that these things are not over-stated, especially for any driver. We try to stay with those cars in the moment.
Does that put more pressure on the team? It’s the kind of thing that, yes, the team tries to keep on top, but it’s very different and it feels different. The drivers are not afraid to show their faces, they are very, very conscious of what happens behind the scenes of it.
The guys on top are more concerned — maybe that’s why we’re in this situation — but they are conscious of the other drivers and the cars behind them and the guys in front of them, and everyone is aware of what’s going on behind the scenes. I don’t want to use that label; I like to see that the whole team understands and works together, and I think we do that. I don’t really want to take it away from the guys that are behind the scenes and working together, so yes I think we do that.
That must be a hard relationship to maintain.
When I was growing up, there were a handful of guys that didn’t want to work with me – not out of disrespect, but because I was a “man’s man” and they didn’t like that. I really don’t want that.
