It has long, sleek, billowing black fur with a white underside, and it can look like a cross between a whale and a dolphin. But, unlike a dolphin, it is not capable of speech.
In the past, dolphins have been domesticated for the purposes of entertainment and sport. Dolphins have even been used to perform in circuses. They are also used to catch and slaughter wild dolphins for use in human culture such as the consumption of traditional Chinese medicine, and as exotic pets.
But the dolphin is no longer used for its primary purpose. The dolphin meat has come to be associated not only with the use of meat as a source of protein for human consumption but also as a delicacy, in which it is consumed widely.
Nowhere is this more evident or blatant than in the consumption of Japanese dolphins captured in countries such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.
Many people argue that dolphin meat is an aphrodisiac, as it contains DHT — which makes men turn on their wives, and thus making them “strong” and sexually available to men. However, this theory ignores the fact that the Japanese dolphin meat has also historically been used in a ritual way to bring good fortune, or fertility results, for men. In some parts of Japan, a traditional Japanese dish is called “Dolphin Soup”.
And this is not the first time Japanese marine mammals have been the prey or the means of entertainment for men in Asia. Last year, Chinese dolphins were caught with human meat in their bellies in Hong Kong, and the year before, Chinese fishermen captured dolphins in the East China Sea and then threw them overboard in the waters off the city.
There is no reason why the consumption of Japanese dolphin meat should be considered immoral. There has been no moralizing about the fish’s eating habits.
Nor has the Japanese government acknowledged this fact about dolphin meat. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said nothing about the consumption of Japanese dolphins for human consumption, and no Japanese political party has issued a statement on the matter.
Japanese dolphin meat has become a symbol of miso soup in a country that still has a strong appetite for it in the face of global meat pressure. Moreover, the Japanese government’s official stance on the matter indicates Japan is not concerned about the negative reaction it could provoke in the West.
