It’s a little tricky to draw one in 3-D – but once we understood how 3-D works, it seemed to be easy. Then, I put this drawing into Photoshop (I was surprised to find that we only have two channels of colour, and only one of depth! So I figured I might as well make a little test sketch before using it and getting it right)

With the help of a 3D printer from a local workshop, we can get the car’s proportions. It only requires a few millimetres for a very precise job. The final product can be bought for a few hundred EUR, it was only a few thousand the first time we made our version and we couldn’t find a 3d printer in the country or a decent workshop. Now we do it ourselves but it’s still very difficult to get a good looking drawing.
Why do you think the car can’t be painted in 3-D?
For now there’s not really anything to paint the car in 3D. The only way to make the car look better, is with a high-quality painting which would be difficult to reproduce in 3D. It would require painting the car very precisely and even more, a lot of time and patience. But we’ll soon start working on that. Maybe one day!
Can you draw a sketch using just your hands?
Our hands are not very good, and it’s not very easy to get a good drawing in a short amount of time using just your hand. So we use a 3D printer. We can also get a decent version of a car sketch in the first two or three hours using a 3D machine, but you usually have to get an idea in the first sketch!
What’s your favourite vehicle from the series?
Not sure. Most of the time, I’m a fan of the cars, because I like driving them. But I can’t say which is the greatest car from the series!
What’s your biggest challenge in drawing a car you see in movie or anime?
The challenges are always around drawing an abstract look into 3-D!
What are the best and worst parts of a car drawing?
The best part is the feeling of working so much, and the worst part is finishing a sketch in just two hours!
